Last weekend Sawfuffle and Requiem went to exhibit with @leatherbacks.umd as part of @univofmaryland and Maryland Day and it was brutal! The new generation of machines at the club were very powerful and thrashed the new Polymax PLA bases. Ultimately switching to some TPU components allowed Sawfuffle to last throughout the day. The future looks bright for them and lessons were learned for these before returning to competition! After a week of fun on the big bots it's time to go down to the little ones! Requiem returns alongside Sawfuffle to join @leatherbacks.umd and compete at Marlyand Day at @univofmaryland for the SCR@M competition! These two hope to teach the students a thing or two about plastic ants! April NHRL is concluded and with it Mind Flayer's 2nd outing. MF went 0-2 this event with losses to Maximizer and Blue Cheese. Both robots are worthy competitors so I have 0 complaints about the quality of matches but this also showed how MF still has more development to go. For now it will head back to the drawing board! Thanks to @outsideoftheboxpodcast for the Boxy award from last year too! Woah, where have we been? Well ever since March NHRL many other non-robot things have been keeping us busy but for the upcoming April event we're back in gear! Not too much exciting robot building has happened, but the Mind Flayer is coming.... This past weekend at @nationalhavoc was Vorion's 2nd test against @botsfc and the reigning champ Emulsifier. Much respect to Plasma Gun, Catalyst XXX, and BEAST for solid matches in the day, but it all came down to the duel in the Final where Vorion threatened the king, but still needs to grow in the 2024 season. Time for a Moto event report! Big thanks to @jcrbphoto for the epic photo of Fracas mid-suplex. Overall Moto tested lots of interesting little technologies such as @repeatrobotics Magnum gearboxes (spoiler: they did great!), the arrival of Mind Flayer to the 12lb scene and the high resilience of Vorion even against some of the strongest competitors in the class. Though I didn't take away any hardware on its own, it was still a great time! Before the Moto recap arrives, astute viewers of the stream may have seen a very weird big wheel robot. Allow me to introduce the newest 12lb entry: Mind Flayer! Shoutout to @teamhoneycracked for hosting some pre-Motorama testing! Looks like the weapon is humming away just fine after throwing around 12lbs of robot matter 😉 Motorama prep continues! After @botsfc and Knock-Off White ruined the top plate it was time to give Vorion some more protection! The main plate is 0.16" 6061 Aluminum and the motor cover is 3mm Grade 5 Titanium. Using some propane and some arm strength, the cover was bent into place giving it a generous air gap. Instead of painting the claw pattern again, I decided to paint the whole thing black then laid a standard sticker pattern over it. Overall much easier and not a bad finish!
